Long trip abroad checklist
Opens in Tatask as a new task with all 42 steps. New to Tatask? It'll be waiting when you've signed up.
A trip of several weeks or months needs more than a packing list. Documents take time, your home and money need to run without you, and a few things are easy to forget until the last week.
This checklist works backwards from departure. Entry rules, visas, vaccines and travel advice change and differ by passport and destination, so the tasks point you to your government's travel advice and official health sources rather than stating requirements.
Copy it into Tatask and the dates count from today. If you leave sooner than three months from now, do the early tasks first and compress the rest.
Decide the start date, the length and the places. A rough route is enough; you can fill in detail later.
Many countries have rules on how long a passport must remain valid. Check each destination with your government's travel advice, and renew early if needed.
Rules depend on your passport and how long you stay. Use your government's foreign travel advice and the destination's official embassy or immigration site. Do not rely on blogs.
Some take weeks. Apply through the official government site only, and note the processing time shown there.
Ask your doctor or a travel clinic what to discuss for your route. Official sources include the WHO and your national health service. Do this early, as some courses take time.
Some airlines and border officials ask for proof of onward travel. Check the airline's and destination's current rules.
Read what is covered for trip length, activities, pre-existing conditions and cancellation. Check the policy wording rather than the headline.
Costs vary widely, so check your provider's current rates and compare with local SIM or eSIM providers.
Ask your bank about overseas fees and limits. Order a second card if you can, and keep it separate from the first.
Many governments run a free service that sends safety updates for the countries you are in.
Decide whether you will sublet, ask someone to check in, or leave it empty. Check your home insurance for rules on long absences.
Include your route, insurance details and passport number. Choose someone you can reach easily.
