About this plan

Decluttering works best in small, finished steps. This plan starts with a clear reason and a simple keep rule, then moves through your home in order, from quick wins to wardrobes, paper and storage.

Each room is sorted into five boxes: keep, donate, sell, recycle and bin. That stops items drifting into a pile of things to decide later.

Copy it into Tatask and each phase is dated from today. Adjust the weeks to suit your home, and where a rule matters, such as bulky waste or how long to keep papers, check your local council or official site.

What's in this plan

See every step
  • Set up (day 0)
    • Write down why you are decluttering

A clear reason, such as a spare room or less cleaning, helps when a decision gets hard.

    • Choose a keep rule for each item

Pick one question to ask of everything, for example: have I used this in the last year, and do I like it?

    • List your rooms and spaces in the order you will tackle them

Paste this into an AI assistant to build your list.

      Prompt to copy

Help me plan a declutter of my <room>. List the categories of items I should expect to find, and suggest a keep, donate, sell, recycle and bin sort for each. Do not guess at the value of anything.
    • Pick 3 short slots in your diary for decluttering
    • Buy or gather boxes, bin bags and a marker
    • Label 5 boxes: keep, donate, sell, recycle, bin
  • Week 1: quick wins (day 1)
    • Bin obvious rubbish from the kitchen and bathroom
    • Clear out the fridge and the food cupboards

Check dates on tins and packets. Donate unopened food that is in date to a food bank.

    • Sort the bathroom cabinet and bin expired products

For medicines, ask a pharmacist how to dispose of them safely rather than bin them.

    • Clear the surfaces in the hallway and living room
    • Gather 20 items to donate in one bag
  • Weeks 2 and 3: bedrooms and wardrobes (day 8)
    • Pull every item out of one wardrobe onto the bed
    • Sort the wardrobe into the five boxes

Keep only what fits now and that you would wear this season.

    • Try on anything you are unsure about
    • Sort drawers and shoes into the five boxes
    • Clear under the bed and the bedside tables
    • Sort each remaining bedroom the same way
  • Weeks 4 and 5: living spaces and paper (day 22)
    • Sort books, DVDs and games into the five boxes
    • Clear one shelf at a time and wipe it before refilling
    • Gather all loose paper into one pile

Paper piles hide bills and forms, so do this in one sitting.

    • Shred papers with personal details

Look up how long to keep tax and bank papers on your government's official site.

    • Scan or photograph keepsake papers
    • Sort cables, chargers and old tech into the five boxes

Take electronics to a recycling point, not the bin.

  • Weeks 6 and 7: storage areas (day 36)
    • Empty the loft, garage or shed in sections
    • Sort stored items into the five boxes

Ask of each box: would I buy this again today?

    • Clear the kitchen drawers and utensils
    • Sort the toy, craft and hobby supplies
    • Choose where sentimental items live in one memory box

Limit it to one box so it stays manageable.

  • Weeks 8 and 9: send things on (day 50)
    • Photograph the items you will sell
    • List 5 of the best items for sale

Paste this into an AI assistant to draft the listing.

      Prompt to copy

Write a short, honest listing to sell <item> in <condition>. Include a plain title and a description of size, age and any faults. Do not suggest a price; I will check recent sold listings myself.
    • Book a charity pick-up or drop-off for donations

Check that the charity accepts your items before you go.

    • Take electronics and batteries to a recycling point
    • Book a council collection for bulky waste

Check your local council website for rules and any fee.

    • Take the remaining donation bags to the charity shop
  • Keep it clear (day 70)
    • Give every kept item a home
    • Set a one in, one out rule for clothes and books
    • Run a 10-minute tidy each week (day 77) (repeats weekly)

Set a short, regular reset so clutter does not build back up.

    • Review the whole home again after 3 months (day 180)
